A newborn photoshoot is a wonderful way to capture your baby’s earliest days, but it can feel daunting if you’re not sure what to expect. From timing and preparation to keeping your little one comfortable, there are ways to make the experience smooth and stress-free. Here are my top 10 tips to ensure your newborn session is enjoyable for both you and your baby.

1. Book Early
Secure your session during pregnancy, ideally between 28–32 weeks. Newborn photographers often have limited availability, and booking early ensures your spot is reserved shortly after your baby arrives.
2. Schedule at the Right Time
The ideal age for a newborn photoshoot is between 5–14 days old. Babies are naturally sleepy during this period, making it easier to capture those curled-up, peaceful poses.

3. Feed and Change Before the Session
A well-fed, clean baby is a happy baby. Feeding and changing your newborn just before the session helps them feel calm and content, making posing and photographing easier.
4. Keep Your Baby Comfortable
Dress your baby in soft, breathable layers and maintain a warm studio environment. Comfort is key for a calm and stress-free session.

5. Bring Essentials
Pack a bag with extra nappies, wipes, a change of clothes, and any soothing items like a favourite blanket or pacifier. Having everything on hand prevents interruptions and keeps the session flowing smoothly.
6. Choose Simple Outfits
Avoid overly complicated outfits with buttons, zippers, or tight bands. Simple clothing allows for easier posing and helps keep your baby comfortable.

7. Be Flexible
Babies are unpredictable, so allow plenty of time for feeding, napping, and soothing. A professional photographer will guide the session while adapting to your baby’s needs.
8. Stay Calm and Relaxed
Your baby can sense your mood. Staying calm and relaxed helps your newborn feel safe, resulting in natural, peaceful expressions during the photoshoot.

9. Prepare Siblings and Family
If older siblings are joining, explain the session to them and consider bringing snacks or quiet toys to keep them happy. This ensures everyone enjoys the experience.
10. Trust Your Photographer
An experienced newborn photographer knows how to safely pose and handle your baby while capturing beautiful, natural images. Trust their guidance and enjoy watching your little one shine in front of the camera.
